COMM STUDENTS
win at the
Documentary Festival
Valley Christian
High School Intro
to Video
students, Daniel
Huffman and Josh
Lee, took fourth
place in the Bay
Area Social Issues
Documentary Festival
contest.
According to video
teacher, Mr. Terry
McElhatton, the SI
DocFest organizers
reported that the
competition was
extremely close,
with just one point
separating the first
place documentary
from VC’s fourth
place finisher.
These two first-year
VCHS video students
focused on the issue
of loneliness among
the elderly. They
worked on their
documentary,
Defeating
Loneliness in
cooperation with the
non-profit agency
Love I.N.C.
The VC videographers
received
three-thousand
dollars for their
documentary, split
three ways.
One-thousand dollars
went to the
filmmakers,
one-thousand dollars
to Love I.N.C., and
one-thousand dollars
to Valley Christian
High School’s
Communications
Department.
Daniel and Josh are
now further
polishing their
documentary to enter
it in the Student
Television Network (STN)
spring nationals
competition in
March.

ADVANCED TELEVISION
The
advanced class
continues to present
the live newscasts
daily to the
students of VCHS.
Announcements and
sporting events are
broadcast to
inform and encourage
student involvement.
On May 10,
Chris and Cathy
Reiley are
coming to our campus
to present their
film "After the
Truth," a
German film that has
changed the face of
film in Europe. It
is a courtroom drama
of a
"what if" scenario.
What if Dr. Josef
Mengele survived and
had to stand trial
for his crimes.
This film has led
the way for German
people coming to
terms with the past
and releasing movies
such as Blindspot and
Downfall.
There are only a
few translated
versions of this
film and we will
have the extremely
unique opportunity
to see this film
with the
screenwriters
who will
be available for
discussion after the
film.

JOURNALISM STUDENTS TRAVEL TO PHILLY CONVENTION
In November 2007, Advanced Journalism students and Don & Diann Fugate traveled to Philadelphia to attend the National JOURNALISM EDUCATION ASSOCIATION Fall Convention.
Over four thousand students from all over the U.S. gathered for the 4 day event which hosted seminars on journalism, radio, yearbook, video, TV, film and photography. A variety of classes were offered from 8am to 5pm each day.
Students also enjoyed touring the city and seeing sites such as Independence hall, the Liberty Bell, and of course, the favorite of most students, the famous "Rocky steps!"
JEA conventions are held twice a year in various locations and have been a valuable learning experience for Communications students for years.
