graduates are making their mark
around the world.
VC alum, Lauren McElhatton,
recently returned from Africa
where she was one of ten cast
members seen in “JYA: Junior
Year Abroad,” a landmark Web
Television show from NBC
Universal. The cast was hand
picked by the staff at NBC out
of more than one-thousand
candidates. Lauren, a senior at UC San Diego,
spent the fall studying at the
University of Kwazulu Natal’s
Howard College in Durban, South
Africa. In addition to media
courses, Lauren learned Zulu and
took African Dance classes.
Every week she and the other JYA
cast members posted new video
“webisodes” about their experiences and travels in
Africa on NBC’s JYA web site.
Lauren, a 2003 graduate of
Valley Christian High School,
is a fourth-year Visual Arts
Media major at UCSD, graduating
in May 2007.

to Nate Marshall, Terry McElhatton and the Film & TV students for a successful 2007 Film Festival held
on May 12.
Twenty-five entries were submitted; 8 trophies and 6 certificates were awarded for the students' accomplishments.

TV & FILM TO STN
During March, TV, film and video students traveled to Southern California to attend the Student Television Network conference in Anaheim. Accompanied by COMM DEPT teachers, Terry McElhatton and Nate Marshall, these students attended seminars and enjoyed many hours of instruction in a variety of areas. "The conference was extremely informative and I loved it! There were so many classes offered covering every aspect of the TV and film world," said COMM DEPT student, junior Tori Bergland.

JOURNALISM & RADIO STUDENTS TO ESPN
April 18-22, 2007: COMM DEPT students traveled to New York and Connecticut to visit ESPN studios and watch live tapings of ESPN shows. In Connecticut, 7 Journalism students and 2 radio students toured the ESPN headquarters and met many of the ESPN TV personalities. Then students traveled to the ESPN New York studios to watch a taping of "Cold Pizza" and visit ESPN Zone. To end the trip, COMM DEPT students were treated to a Mets baseball game at Shea stadium.
Junior Jenn Elias helped plan the once-in-a-lifetime
trip for the students; her aunt who works at ESPN Connecticut extended the invitation to VCHS COMM DEPT students.

MIDNIGHT CLEAR
While in San Jose premiering their film MIDNIGHT CLEAR at the Cinequest Film Festival, Jerry Jenkins (Left Behind book series author), Dallas Jenkins, film producer, and actor Stephen Baldwin visited VCHS and spoke to Valley COMM DEPT students.
BALDWIN'S INFLUENCE Testifying to his new-found faith in Christ, Stephen Baldwin encouraged students to live for Christ and make an impact on their generation. He also delighted students with the voice of Barney Rubble from his part in the movie version of The Flintstones!
Jerry Jenkins encouraged young writers to use their gifts for the Lord and His kingdom. Dallas Jenkins spoke to excellence in all that is done in life as Christians representing Christ.

COMM Students Cover Harvest Crusade
October 2007: Radio student Kevin Fanelli and Journalism Christian News editor Adam Hill covered the Greg Laurie Harvest Crusade in San Jose,
COMM DEPT students, Fanelli and Hill were credentialed as working media for the event. They conducted interviews with musical artists and well as the event coordinators.

Sports Editor Ryan Eshoff
Wins SAP Open High School Writers Day
On February 14, students from high schools throughout Santa Clara County were invited to the HP Pavilion in San Jose to participate in the 2007 SAP Open Tennis Tournament High School Writers Day. Writers and photographers were given the rare opportunity to experience a day in the life of a sports journalist at the SAP Open, one of the premier men’s professional tennis tournaments on the ATP circuit.
To complete the experience, the student journalists were asked to write articles summarizing their experiences at the event. Tournament staff judged the essays and selected Warrior sports editor, Ryan Eshoff from Valley Christian High School as the winning author. He received a laptop for his award-winning article.

With a fully functioning TV studio, multiple recording studios and over 40 iMacs & G5 computers running the latest software (Pro Tools, Adobe Suite CS2 & Final Cut Pro), students have all the tools necessary to produce award winning projects and publications.

movie
screen
was installed
this
year.
Through print and broadcast media, Communications students at Valley Christian High School learn to express their ideas, emotions, God's truth and Christian faith.
